Six Audi Models Recognised for Safety Excellence
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded its highest safety rating, the TOP SAFETY PICK+, to six Audi models. This accolade highlights the A5, Q5 SUV, Q5 Sportback, A6 Sportback e-tron, Q6 SUV e-tron, and Q6 Sportback e-tron, affirming Audi’s position as a leader among premium brands in safety performance for 2026.
Rigorous Evaluation Process
The IIHS employs a comprehensive evaluation process that encompasses various crash test categories, including front and side impact assessments, pedestrian safety considerations, and the effectiveness of front crash prevention systems. To achieve the TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation, vehicles must excel across all these tests.
New Stricter Standards for 2026
In 2026, the requirements for obtaining the TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards have become more stringent. Previously, a vehicle could secure a TOP SAFETY PICK with only an acceptable rating in the challenging moderate overlap front test; now, a good rating is mandatory for both awards. This updated criterion also places greater emphasis on rear passenger safety since 2022.
Requirements for TOP SAFETY PICK+
To qualify for the TOP SAFETY PICK+, vehicles must not only achieve a good rating in the pedestrian front crash prevention test but also secure at least an acceptable rating in the updated vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention evaluation. This evaluation includes assessments against both motorcycle and semitrailer targets.
Front Crash Prevention Systems Standardised
Notably, IIHS has mandated that front crash prevention systems must be standard across all trims to qualify under the new criteria for 2026. Optional systems no longer suffice. Good ratings in small overlap front and side tests remain essential, along with headlights rated as acceptable or good across all variants.
