BMW not only produces exceptional cars, but it also engages in contemporary art! With the sixth edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, the German brand reinforces its role as a patron in the Indian cultural landscape. An adventure where each brushstroke resonates like the roar of a powerful engine.
A historic partnership
Since 2012, BMW has been weaving an unbreakable bond with the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB), a flagship event celebrating contemporary art in India. For this sixth edition, under the guidance of curator Nikhil Chopra and HH Art Spaces, 66 artistic projects from over 25 countries are on display for the curious eyes of visitors. The inauguration took place on December 12, 2025, and this artistic festival unfolds over four months through the colorful streets of Kochi.
Art at the heart of innovation
In a vibrant statement, Mr. Hardeep Singh Brar, President & CEO of BMW Group India, highlighted the importance of this collaboration: « We are proud to participate in this platform that celebrates creativity and dialogue. Art inspires progressive thinking, and this alliance reflects our desire to innovate in motion. » Imagine a car that not only transports but also conveys ideas: this is the spirit of BMW.
A bountiful exhibition
The exhibition, the largest contemporary art biennale in South Asia, spans 29 locations in Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Willingdon Islands, and Ernakulam. It engages in dialogue with a constellation of exhibitions, performances, and discursive programs, rooted in the unique social and cultural ecology of Kochi. This edition places « economies of friendship » at the heart of its message, inviting visitors to reflect on their own stories while celebrating those of the artists.
A strong cultural commitment
BMW does not merely stand as a spectator; it has been actively involved in the Indian art scene for years. In 2007, two Art Cars designed by iconic artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein were presented at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. These works are not just vehicles: they become rolling canvases, symbols of a fusion between art and automobile. The program « The Future is Born of Art » further testifies to this commitment to innovation and sustainability.
A transformative journey for Nikhil Chopra
Nikhil Chopra, the creative mind behind this edition, is a versatile artist who blends performance, drawing, and sculpture. His creations explore themes of identity and memory, using the everyday as a backdrop. Born in Kolkata in 1974 and based in Goa, he has evolved his art by questioning the human condition through a multitude of mediums. His work has been exhibited in prestigious institutions such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
HH Art Spaces: an incubator of ideas
Co-founded by Nikhil Chopra and Romain Loustau in 2014, HH Art Spaces is much more than just an exhibition space: it is a true artistic laboratory. This collective is dedicated to promoting artists and creating cultural events that foster interdisciplinary exchange. It operates as a crossroads where new ideas and innovative artistic practices intersect.
This collaborative spirit is reflected in every project supported by BMW and HH Art Spaces. Together, they pave the way for a new generation of Indian artists emerging on the global stage, proving that art can be a powerful vehicle for social change.
