BMW Motorrad presents the BMW R 1300 R Superhooligan.

MunichBMW Motorrad has unveiled the R 1300 R Superhooligan at the 84th Daytona 200 weekend, taking place from March 5 to 7, 2026. This model pays homage to Steve McLaughlin’s landmark victory in the first Superbike race at Daytona, 50 years ago, alongside Reg Pridmore’s triumph in the inaugural AMA Superbike Championship. Both riders competed on BMW R 90 S motorcycles, cementing their place in racing history. This year, BMW Motorrad ambassador Nate Kern will also race the Superhooligan as part of the Mission Foods Super Hooligan series during the MotoAmerica Daytona 200.

A Custom Creation for a Historic Occasion

The BMW R 1300 R Superhooligan is a highly dynamic project developed by a select group from the BMW Motorrad Custom Speed Shop. This team, led by project manager Philipp Ludwig and comprising vehicle designer Andreas Martin and colour designer Theresa Stukenbrock, aimed to commemorate McLaughlin’s Daytona success with a unique custom bike. Their collaboration has resulted in a machine that not only reflects the design ethos of the original R 90 S but also embodies the raw energy of modern superbikes.

Design Elements and Performance Specifications

At its core, the Superhooligan builds on the 145 hp (107 kW) foundation of the BMW R 1300 R. The design incorporates notable features reminiscent of the naked superbikes from half a century ago, such as prominent starting number fields and wide handlebars. The bike’s racing heritage is further highlighted by its number 83, a direct tribute to McLaughlin’s historical win. The colour scheme pays homage to the R 90 S, with components like the front fenders and tank side panels painted in period-appropriate hues.

Enhanced Riding Dynamics

To meet the high demands of performance, the Superhooligan achieves impressive dynamics capable of reaching speeds up to 275 km/h. This is made possible through the use of a lightweight BMW M 1000 RR carbon front wheel and a variety of high-strength carbon-fibre components sourced from both BMW Motorrad and Ilmberger Carbon Parts. The bike also features fully adjustable suspension, with an extended Wilbers upside-down front fork offering enhanced lean angle clearance.

Advanced Components for a Supersport Experience

The focus on a supersport riding experience is evident in the inclusion of fully adjustable hand levers from Advik and a lightweight titanium exhaust system from Akrapovič, which contributes to a sonorous engine note. Milled footrests from BMW Motorrad complete this bespoke project, ensuring that every aspect is tailored for performance and agility.

A Celebration of Racing Legacy

Alongside the Superhooligan, BMW will showcase the original R 90 S that competed in 1976, reinforcing the connection between past and present. As Daytona celebrates its iconic 200-mile race anniversary, BMW Motorrad will reflect on a significant chapter in its over 100-year history. The original AMA Superbike Series marked a pivotal moment for BMW, allowing it to bolster its sporty image through competitive racing.

Revisiting the Glory Days

The reunion of key figures from the 1976 era adds a layer of nostalgia to the event. McLaughlin, Pridmore, and Udo Gietl are set to gather alongside the R 1300 Superhooligan and the historic racing machines, showcasing the evolution of BMW’s racing pedigree. The original R 90 S has been meticulously prepared by BMW Group Classic for its appearance at the Daytona 200, ensuring that the spirit of competition remains alive.
