Since last March, a rumour has been growing: Lewis Hamilton, the maestro of Formula 1, reportedly wished to see the emergence of a hypercar F44 at Ferrari, a tribute to the legendary F40. The project, buoyed by whispers and a flamboyant arrival within the Scuderia, seemed promising. But the latest revelations from journalists close to Maranello cast a chill on this illusion: the F44 may never have truly existed. A disillusionment that adds a hint of drama to an already tumultuous season.
A chimera at the heart of passion
When Lewis Hamilton mentioned his desire to create “an F44”, the idea immediately resonated with the hearts of speed enthusiasts. Just imagine: a hypercar with a roaring atmospheric V12, a manual gearbox that connects you to the road like a wild guitar solo on stage. This vision of a return to roots, far from modern norms of hybrids and downsizing, was intoxicating. In Maranello, the photo of the Brit posing in front of an F40 in January was enough to fuel hopes: a discussion about this car must have taken place, right?
However, Ferrari has maintained a radio silence worthy of the greatest mysteries in the automotive sphere. This leads to a troubling first question: was this F44 merely a sweet dream of Hamilton, interpreted as a project by scoop-hungry journalists? Giorgio Terruzzi, a well-informed journalist on the inner workings of Maranello, recently highlighted what could be nothing more than a soap opera bubble in the world of hypercars. The complete absence of concrete elements regarding the project reveals a desire that may never have progressed to the next stage.

Closer to the idea than to reality
According to Terruzzi, it seems there were some informal promises regarding the F44, made to the British driver before everything collapsed like a house of cards. Internal whispers at Maranello indicate that the project is no longer being considered, which would have annoyed Hamilton. There are even talks of a deep “anger” from the seven-time world champion, convinced he had received certain guarantees. The irony lies in the fact that these rumours have taken on a much larger scale than the reality itself.
Other Italian journalists, such as Pino Allievi, remind us that Ferrari only embarks on numbered creations during specific historical occasions: the F40 to celebrate the brand’s forty years, the F50 for fifty years, or the Enzo in homage to the founder. Imagining an F44 solely to mark Hamilton’s arrival is more folklore than a sensible industrial strategy. In other words, even if the idea may have sprouted in the driver’s mind, it had little reason to become tangible.

A mirror of Ferrari–Hamilton tensions
But let’s also talk about the sporting context. Hamilton’s first season at Ferrari has not really been what one might have hoped for: off-track incidents in qualifying, a complete absence of podiums, and palpable frustrations. In such an atmosphere, bringing to life a project as emblematic as an F44 could have been perceived as an unwelcome coup de théâtre. One can understand why Ferrari would not want to highlight a “new cycle” while their star recruit is going through one of the most challenging seasons of his career.
The lingering question is: what did Hamilton really want? A limited model inspired by the SP3 could be conceivable, but the idea of a numbered F44 seems exaggerated. The affair mainly highlights the blur between the carefully orchestrated storytelling by brands, the personal expectations of a superstar driver, and the industrial reality of a house that jealously protects its image. This mix of genres only sows false hopes among fans.
So yes, the Ferrari F44 may have existed in the dreams of some or in the whispered conversations of the paddocks, but the reality seems quite different. Scuderia Ferrari continues its path, under the spotlight and the excessive expectations, but without that famous model that could have embodied the perfect marriage between tradition and modernity. A disillusionment that only reinforces the already impressive myth of the prancing horse brand.
