The End of an Era: Mercedes-AMG Swaps the C63 Four-Cylinder for a Six-Cylinder

The saga of the four-cylinder C63 comes to an end, and for brand enthusiasts, it feels like a breath of fresh air. With the promise of a return to roots, Mercedes-AMG is paving the way for a new era, that of the six-cylinder. But what can we expect with this evolution?

A Farewell to the Four-Cylinder

Undoubtedly, the four-cylinder C63 is the most controversial AMG in history. After months of speculation about Mercedes’ desire to rid itself of this controversial engine, the axe has fallen. AMG chief, Michael Schiebe, confirmed that the C63 would disappear in favor of a 100% gasoline version powered by a straight-six. And no, no V8 in sight, despite the pleas of purists!

This new configuration will feature a 3.0-liter turbo, taking the block « M256M » from the CLE 53. In this elegant coupe, it develops 443 hp (approximately 326 kW) and a torque of 560 Nm. However, it remains to be seen if these figures will be inflated for the upcoming C53.

Numbers That Speak, But Not Everything

The previous C63 boasted performance that would make any supercar envious with its combined power of 671 hp (approximately 493 kW) and a staggering torque of 1,020 Nm. But beware, the numbers do not tell the whole story. The abandonment of the hybrid system should lighten the car’s total weight, which, in American specification, already weighed an impressive 2,185 kg.

Ironically, the decision to set aside the four-cylinder does not result from a massive rejection by enthusiasts, but rather from the difficulty in adapting this engine to Euro 7 standards. One question remains: why didn’t Mercedes anticipate this constraint during the model’s development?

A New C53 on the Horizon

The future C53 is expected to be based on the facelift of the C-Class, anticipated in the coming months. We first heard about a six-cylinder version nearly a year ago when internal sources at Mercedes revealed that this change was underway. At the time, AMG had sidestepped the topic, but the rumors ultimately proved to be founded: engineers are busy adding two cylinders under the hood.

Good News for Enthusiasts?

In conclusion: Who would have thought that stricter anti-pollution standards could lead to good news for thrill-seekers? Historically, downsizing has often been a poison for performance cars. The new C53, although devoid of a glorious V8, could generate much greater excitement thanks to its 100% thermal six-cylinder, far more engaging than the complex hybrid that preceded it.

Michael Schiebe has long defended the PHEV approach, calling this configuration « very, very progressive ». In a 2024 interview, Jaime Cohen, the head of Mercedes Australia, even suggested that buyers would eventually accept the four-cylinder C63 as they accepted buttonless smartphones. With this electrification on the way out, we will never know if that was true.

However, AMG seems to already be turning the page: even if no confirmation has been made regarding a return of the V8 for the C63, the brand has announced it is working on a new V8. The future looks promising for performance enthusiasts.
