Mercedes-AMG GLE and GLS: V8 Power Gets a Serious Boost

The big AMG SUVs aren’t messing about. With their new twin-turbo V8s and horsepower figures nudging 600PS, the fettled GLE and GLS models from Mercedes’ performance division promise supercar performance wrapped in family-friendly packaging. A potent mix, but at what cost?

The Heartbeat of a Flat-Plane V8

At Mercedes-AMG, when they talk about V8s, they mean business. The GLE and GLS are getting a new powertrain: a 4.0-litre twin-turbo unit featuring a flat-plane crankshaft. Inspired by motorsport, this design aims for sharper revs, a raspier soundtrack, and increased responsiveness. The result? 604PS and a colossal 850Nm of torque. To support this characterful engine, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system adds a 23PS boost and smooths out power delivery, while also optimising fuel consumption. A necessary compromise for vehicles of this size.

Performance That Defies Physics

With such power under the bonnet, it’s no surprise these SUVs can hit 62mph in under four seconds. The 0-62mph sprint is dispatched in 3.8 seconds for the GLE and 4.2 seconds for the GLS, with an electronically limited top speed of 174mph. To handle this surge of power, Mercedes-AMG has revised the fuel injection, optimised airflow, and modified the turbocharging. The driveshafts have been strengthened to cope with the increased torque. On the GLS, a rear differential lock further enhances agility – a notion that’s relative for a vehicle of this stature.

A Chassis Tuned for Dynamism

Beyond the engine, dynamic behaviour has been a key focus. The active roll control system has been reworked to minimise body roll, particularly during changes of direction. Adaptive air suspension is standard, promising an excellent balance between comfort and body control. The aim is to give these behemoths surprising agility, far from the inertia you might expect at first glance. The more direct steering and upgraded brakes complete the package to deliver a sporty driving experience.

A More Aggressive, Yet Subtle Look

Visually, the updates are subtle but effective. The new AMG grilles with vertical slats, more generous air intakes, and fresh light signatures give the GLE and GLS a sharper appearance. The imposing wheels, up to 23 inches on the GLS, accentuate their athletic stance. At the rear, the trapezoidal twin exhaust outlets hint at the sportiness of these versions. The overall impression is one of contained power, without resorting to ostentatious excess. A visual signature that suits these high-end SUVs.

The Price of Excess

These AMG versions are obviously not within everyone’s reach. The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S is expected to start around £110,000, while the GLS 63 S will command closer to £130,000. These prices place these SUVs firmly in the ultra-luxury segment. They are aimed at wealthy customers seeking extreme performance in a versatile vehicle, capable of carrying the whole family in unparalleled comfort and with a strong status image. While rivals exist, perhaps less overtly powerful, from BMW (X5 M, X7 M60i) or Audi (RS Q8), AMG is making a strong statement with this return to its V8 roots.

Verdict: A Daily Power Monster?

  • For whom? Affluent families with a passion for performance, seeking a large, luxurious SUV capable of delivering thrills without sacrificing comfort or versatility.
  • Ideal use: Long motorway journeys, country roads where the power can be used safely, and family transport in a cocoon of luxury and technology.
  • The limitations: The significant purchase and running costs, high fuel consumption, and agility that, despite AMG’s efforts, remains that of a vehicle weighing over 2 tonnes.
  • Alternatives: BMW X5 M Competition, Audi RS Q8, Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT.
  • What to remember: Mercedes-AMG proves it’s still possible to offer prodigious V8s capable of astonishing performance in family SUVs, all with the brand’s signature refinement and build quality.
