In a car world where SUVs reign supreme, the 1978 Dodge Trans Van evokes a time when adventure on four wheels took much more original forms. With its unique look and generous engine, this model stands as a tribute to a bygone era, yet still full of charm. If you dream of limitless road trips, this van could very well be your ticket to freedom.

1978 Dodge Trans Van with Chinook fiberglass body

A design that does not go unnoticed

The Dodge Trans Van is not just a simple utility vehicle; it evokes an entire travel culture. With its enlarged fibreglass body and unmatched style, it positions itself as a true chameleon of the American roads. This model distinguishes itself from its predecessor, the Chinook, by its lack of a raised roof, making its use for camping a bit less practical, yet equally appealing. Indeed, it is a cross between a conversion van and a camper, attracting attention with its bold graphics that have contributed to its somewhat quirky reputation.

An invitation to escape

Inside, the Trans Van offers a thoughtful layout. The rear entry is an emblematic feature, allowing for optimised space at the front for seating and sleeping areas. The bathroom corner, strategically located at the back, facilitates access while providing a sense of space. Imagine waking up, opening the door, and finding yourself facing nature: a true little slice of paradise on wheels!

A powerful heart: the 440 engine

While I cannot confirm the exact engine lurking under the bonnet of this specimen, the two enormous exhaust outlets suggest that it could very well be the famous 440 engine. This block gained popularity in these chassis around 1978, when the energy crisis faded and it was firmly believed that petrol prices would remain eternally at 55 cents a gallon. Models powered by the 440 were then the muscle cars of the camper world. Despite all this enticing torque, I can’t help but be grateful that my Chinook is still equipped with a 360… well, almost always.

A declining market but nostalgic value

Unfortunately, the Trans Van did not enjoy the same longevity as some of its competitors. While Chinook managed to hold its own until recently, the Trans Van has disappeared, like so many other models from that era. Today, these vans are becoming rare, making each discovery of a well-preserved model even more precious. It’s a bit like finding an old vinyl at a flea market: it evokes memories and stirs emotions.
