Red Bull pays tribute to Dietrich Mateschitz with its DM01 engine.

The 2026 season is shaping up to be a decisive turning point for Red Bull in Formula 1. The Austrian manufacturer, usually associated with energy drinks, is embarking on the design and manufacture of its own engines, in collaboration with Ford. This bold challenge is accompanied by a poignant tribute to Dietrich Mateschitz, the founder of the brand, whose innovative spirit continues to inspire the team.

A new chapter for Red Bull

The decision to design engines in-house was made in 2022, as Honda announced its departure from Formula 1 and discussions with Porsche were not fruitful. It was in this delicate context that Dietrich Mateschitz, then gravely ill, gave the green light to establish an ambitious engine programme. This programme, named Red Bull Powertrains, was initially intended to utilise Honda engines until the end of 2021.

After many months of hard work, the project is finally taking shape and the first engine, branded Red Bull Ford, is about to make its track debut. This milestone marks the manufacturer’s entry into a new era, far from the beaten path of merely selling energy drinks.

The DM01 engine: a tribute to a visionary

This engine will not just be a simple assembly of mechanical parts; it will bear the name “DM01”, in honour of Dietrich Mateschitz, who passed away in 2022. Laurent Mekies, the team’s sporting director, stated: “The very first engine is called ‘DM01’ in tribute to Mr Mateschitz.” A symbolic choice that reflects Mateschitz’s significance to Red Bull.

The visionary character of Mateschitz was highlighted by Mekies: “It is his vision, his boldness; he unleashed the Red Bull spirit which is why we are all here today.” Indeed, his decision to allow Red Bull to become independent in terms of chassis and power units marks a turning point in the team’s history.

A challenge worthy of his legacy

Mekies also emphasised that Mateschitz never shied away from challenges: “He was not afraid of the scale of the challenge and today we have the opportunity to pay tribute to him and, hopefully, make him proud.” A commitment that aligns with the team’s desire to surpass its own limits, both technically and competitively.

Verstappen’s tribute

During the presentation of the 2026 Red Bull livery in Detroit, Max Verstappen also shared his thoughts on this tribute. When asked by RN365, he stated: “I believe it is the only right thing to do. Obviously, it is always sad that he cannot witness it himself, but it is just a very beautiful gesture from Red Bull.”

For Verstappen, Mateschitz represents a great deal: “He means so much to everyone here today, to myself, but also to Formula 1. We will always try to do our best in memory of Dietrich.” A promise that the team seems determined to uphold on the track.

Towards total independence

With the development of the DM01 engine, Red Bull is taking a decisive step towards total independence in terms of power units. This strategic change could transform the team into a true manufacturer, capable of competing with the best. It is not just a matter of performance on the track, but also a way to assert itself in a sport where alliances and partnerships are often the norm.

The DM01 engine thus represents much more than a simple technical advancement. It embodies the bold spirit of a team that, under Mateschitz’s leadership, has managed to reinvent itself and look towards the future. Fans are eagerly awaiting to see what this new era will bring to the circuit.
