Withdrawal from Dakar: Yazeed Al Rajhi bows out to prioritise his health.

The Dakar 2026 will not be the playground for Yazeed Al Rajhi. After a chaotic start to the race, the Saudi driver has decided to withdraw from defending his title, marking the end of a premature adventure. Between punctures and recent injuries, wisdom has ultimately prevailed over adrenaline. And it is a hard blow for someone who triumphed last year on home soil.

A chaotic start to Dakar

The fourth stage of Dakar 2026 has been a true ordeal for Yazeed Al Rajhi and his co-driver Timo Gottschalk. Indeed, while they had legitimate ambitions of a double, they found themselves caught in a downward spiral of problems. As the kilometres passed, punctures accumulated, tipping the balance towards abandonment. After covering 234 km in already difficult conditions, the decision to leave the competition became inevitable.

Injuries that weigh heavily

It is not only the state of the Dakar roads that weighed on Al Rajhi’s decision. Injuries sustained in April 2025 during an accident at Baja Jordan have left lasting effects. Although Yazeed and Timo showed courage in returning to the circuit, the persistent pain in the vertebrae cast a shadow over their preparation. Indeed, their position in the standings, far from satisfactory, prompted both men to seriously reflect: was it really worth taking reckless risks?

A well-considered decision

In a statement marked by clarity, Yazeed Al Rajhi explained: “The heavy additional time losses today led me to prematurely end my Dakar.” This choice, although difficult, seems to have been made with full awareness. He added: “My back injuries were sufficiently healed before the Dakar, but not completely. Putting this healing process at risk without having any chance of aiming for a significant result did not seem fair to me.”

Solidarity in adversity

Timo Gottschalk, his loyal co-driver, did not hide his disappointment but fully supported his driver’s decision. “The Dakar did not go as we hoped, and defending our title slipped away from us very quickly,” he stated, clearly affected by this turn of events. He continued: “In this context, it is wiser not to compromise a complete recovery from last year’s back injuries and to return in full form for the upcoming rallies.”

The Dakar: an uncompromising challenge

The Dakar rally is often described as one of the most demanding competitions in the world, both physically and mentally. Drivers must not only master their vehicle in varied terrains but also manage unforeseen situations that can jeopardise their health. For Yazeed Al Rajhi, the choice to withdraw demonstrates a rare maturity in a sport where bravado is often valued. While some may see this as a failure, it is in reality an act of caution and foresight for a future return.

A page turns

For Yazeed Al Rajhi, this edition of the Dakar ends on a bitter but responsible note. As he prepares to pause his career to focus on his recovery, he leaves behind a legacy of courage and determination. The rally remains a trial where champions are often those who know when it is time to step back. It remains to be seen how this decision will influence his future commitments in the world of rallying.
