Ferrari 250 GTO Auction Fetches $38.5 Million, Falls Short of 2018 Record

High Hopes at Mecum Auctions

When Mecum Auctions announced the sale of a Ferrari 250 GTO at their Kissimmee event, automotive enthusiasts were eager to witness a potential record-breaking auction. However, while other records were shattered, the 250 GTO’s performance fell short of expectations.

Final Sale Price

The auction concluded with a final bid of £38.5 million for the rare white 250 GTO, known as 3729GT. This amount is significantly lower than the previous record of £70 million set in 2018 by collector David MacNeil.

Factors Influencing the Price

Several factors contributed to the GTO’s inability to reach the £50 million threshold:

  • The car, although unique for being the only factory-painted Bianco example, has undergone numerous modifications.
  • It no longer retains its original engine, which is often a critical factor for collectors.

History of the Bianco Speciale

This particular 250 GTO, dubbed ‘The Bianco Speciale’, was originally delivered in 1962 to John Coombs in England. It participated in several prestigious racing events before competing at the highest level of international motorsport for the last time in 1964.
