Elfyn Evans has sealed victory at the Japan Rally, a round thoroughly dominated by Toyota. Despite a final day marked by Oliver Solberg’s charge, the Welshman expertly managed his lead, while the young Swede impressed in the hunt for Super Sunday and Power Stage points.
Sunday’s focus: Solberg targets bonus points
The Japan Rally concluded under overcast skies but on dry roads, with favourable weather allowing drivers to push without reservation. Having rejoined after his Saturday excursion, Oliver Solberg had nothing to gain in the overall standings. His objective for the day was clear: maximise his score under the Super Sunday format, which rewards performances on the final day.
First on the road, the young Swedish prodigy immediately signalled his intentions. From SS15, the longest stage of the rally, he set a comfortable benchmark time, leaving Elfyn Evans over two seconds adrift. It was a powerful display, confirming his potential despite the previous day’s regrets.

Oliver Solberg set multiple fastest times on Sunday.
Evans manages, Katsuta impresses
On the twisty Lake Mikawako stage, it was local driver and Toyota team member Takamoto Katsuta who surprised by taking his first stage win of the weekend. Oliver Solberg, still on a charge, missed out on the stage victory by a mere two-tenths, with Sébastien Ogier splitting the pair. Elfyn Evans, adopting a more cautious approach, managed his effort, his overall dominance of the rally never truly under threat.
The short Kuragaike super special then fell to Sébastien Ogier. The nine-time world champion won both successive runs, once again demonstrating his blistering pace. However, these efforts were insufficient to trouble Elfyn Evans, who maintained a comfortable lead heading into the final Power Stage.
Solberg salvages pride on the finish line
The return to the long Nukata stage confirmed Oliver Solberg’s superiority on this final day. Still chasing valuable points, the Swede set another fastest time. Behind him, Elfyn Evans continued his measured drive, conceding little ground to Sébastien Ogier. The Welshman’s margin before the Power Stage was sufficient to look confidently towards victory.
The final stage, nearly 14 kilometres long, offered one last opportunity to score points. Oliver Solberg, determined to erase the memory of his crash, was imperious. He not only secured the Super Sunday points but also grabbed the 5 points on offer for the Power Stage, a welcome consolation after a rally marred by a single costly error.
Toyota masters its home event
Ultimately, Elfyn Evans’ victory at the Japan Rally was a deserved and faultless performance, delivering a clear win for Toyota on home turf. Sébastien Ogier finished second, completing an all-Toyota podium alongside Sami Pajari, who delivered another solid performance. Hyundai, in contrast, was largely anonymous, with Adrien Fourmaux being the highest-placed driver from the South Korean outfit in fifth. It was an undisputed Japanese dominance.
Japan Rally – The Verdict:
- Elfyn Evans’ victory: A solid and controlled performance, confirming his status as a title contender.
- Toyota’s dominance: The Japanese manufacturer asserted its authority at home, placing three cars on the podium.
- Oliver Solberg salvages the weekend: Despite a costly mistake, the young driver shone on Sunday, securing Super Sunday and Power Stage points.
- Hyundai struggles: The South Korean team remained off the pace, never truly challenging the front-runners.
- Final standings: Evans, Ogier, Pajari, Fourmaux, and Solberg (in that order for the top 5).
- Next up: The World Rally Championship continues on a different surface, presenting new challenges for the drivers.
