The Latest X5 Lands with a Bang – and a Chance to Win One
BMW has pulled the wraps off the fifth generation of its colossal X5, and it’s not just any SUV. This M-badged plug-in hybrid, the M60e xDrive, has arrived with the sort of fanfare usually reserved for rock stars or, in this case, a hole-in-one at a prestigious golf tournament. Indeed, the very car is this year’s prize for a perfect shot on the 17th at the BMW International Open, proving BMW’s commitment to both motorsport DNA and rather expensive golfing incentives.
This isn’t just a facelift; it’s a significant overhaul, promising more tech, a sharper design, and a hybrid powertrain that aims to blend brute force with surprising efficiency. The question is, can this German behemoth truly deliver on its lofty promises, or is it just another oversized family wagon with a fancy badge and a hefty price tag?
Design: More Road Presence, Less Bling
BMW’s design language has been… shall we say, *bold* in recent years. Thankfully, with the new X5, the designers seem to have dialled back the more controversial elements. The kidney grilles, while still substantial, are more elegantly integrated than some of their recent, frankly alarming, siblings. It’s a more mature, imposing look, with sharper lines and a more sculpted bonnet that hints at the power lurking beneath.
The overall silhouette remains unmistakably X5 – that muscular, upright stance that says ‘I’m here, and I’m important’. But there are subtle tweaks. The headlights are sleeker, the air intakes more purposeful, and the rear lights have been redesigned to give it a wider, more planted appearance. It’s a handsome brute, then, that manages to look both aggressive and sophisticated, a difficult balance to strike for something this large.
Powertrain: Hybrid Muscle with a Greenish Hue
Underneath that imposing exterior lies the real story: the M60e xDrive’s plug-in hybrid powertrain. BMW claims a 0-62mph dash in a blistering 4.5 seconds, which is frankly absurd for a vehicle of this size and weight. This is achieved through a potent combination of a V8 engine and an electric motor, though BMW is keeping the exact engine configuration under wraps for now – a curious omission given the car’s flagship status.
What we do know is that it’s designed to offer the sort of performance you’d expect from an M-badged vehicle, coupled with the ability to cover significant distances on electric power alone. This dual personality is the
