There’s nothing like a good old car to make the hearts of enthusiasts race. Imagine a green monster, rescued from the claws of time, ready to relive its finest hours. Here’s the story of the restoration of a 1962 Chrysler Imperial, an ambitious project that combines passion and determination.

A Journey to the Heart of the Woods

In 2008, my brother whispered in my ear: “A friend is selling a 1962 Chrysler Imperial, go take a look!” After following a mysterious gravel path lined with trees, I discovered what seemed to be a forgotten relic, barely touched by the years. The place, semi-abandoned, looked like it had come straight out of an adventure movie, and I was determined to unearth this automotive rarity.

An Astonishing Discovery

On a cold, rainy day, I finally caught sight of the distinctive silhouette of the Chrysler under a thicket of pines. The car, with its depressed look, welcomed me with its hood open. The former owner, busy disconnecting the battery charger, gave me a knowing glance. I felt like an explorer discovering a spaceship stranded in a New Jersey woods.

“Is it going to start?” I asked, adrenaline rising. “Let’s give it a try!” The engine began to purr, and I was already captivated. But the body was covered in a thick layer of leaves and pine needles, as if time had decided to give it a natural blanket.

The Big Clean-Up

After purchasing it for the modest sum of $900 (with an additional charge for towing), the adventure of cleaning and restoring began. Although the car had its flaws, it was mostly in good condition: no rust or broken windows, and the engine still purred. I quickly nicknamed it “The Green Monster”. My automotive maintenance skills being limited, I had to rely on the help of my brother and father for the more complex repairs.

We replaced the wheel cylinders and the master cylinder, quickly discovering that Mopar brakes are a real headache. But with a little patience and a lot of elbow grease, everything eventually worked out.

The Mechanical Troubles

The differential also posed a problem. My brother skillfully crafted a part to repair it, while I still remember buying parts in a rather uninviting industrial area. At that time, I didn’t know that the transmission just needed a simple mount replacement to fix the worrying noise it was making. Once that was done, the transmission turned out to be much more responsive than expected.

A Promising First Test Drive

After months of hard work, the long-awaited moment arrived: driving my Chrysler for the first time. The first few kilometres were magical until the engine began to overheat. A flush of the cooling system and everything was back to normal. With adrenaline at its peak, I realised that this car, despite its flaws, had character.

The Beauty of Another Time

Taking the time to admire the Imperial from different angles, I realised it had undeniable beauty. Upon encountering another enthusiast, I couldn’t help but compare the Imperial to the 1958 Cadillac I had previously owned. While the Cadillac shone with refinement, the Imperial stood out for its driving comfort.

Details That Make the Difference

The standalone headlights and futuristic lines are part of the details that make this car unique. Despite less pronounced styling finishes than during the famous “fins” era, the rocket-shaped taillights add an undeniable touch of originality. It’s a real challenge to keep them in good condition, but this car deserves every effort.

A New Chapter

In 2014, after several years of enjoying my Imperial without major mechanical issues, I decided to sell it to embark on a new adventure. I found a buyer ready to pay $5,500 without even seeing the car. Sure, I may have lost money on the restoration, but the experience gained was priceless.

A Durable Monster

With its 413 cubic inch engine delivering 350 horsepower, this Chrysler is an example of durability. Even after years of abandonment, it restarted without a hitch. This proves that the quality of Imperials was indeed real. Despite this, it’s surprising that this brand couldn’t attract more buyers compared to competitors like Cadillac, who had that little “something extra.”
