In a world where mobility is evolving at full speed, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) has chosen to propel Diogo Pinto to the position of General Director of Region I. From 1st January 2026, he will be the conductor of a complex symphony that spans across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
An impressive journey
Diogo Pinto is no stranger to the mobility landscape. Before taking the reins of Region I, he served as Director of Policies at the FIA since February 2020. His role involved forging links with European institutions and UNECE on crucial topics such as sustainability and consumer priorities. He is not just a bureaucrat; he was appointed Acting General Director in June 2025, a testament to the trust placed in him.
The challenges of a diverse region
The FIA’s Region I is the largest and most heterogeneous of the organisation’s mobility regions, comprising 103 clubs that advocate for the interests of over 41 million members. It’s a bit like being the head of a large family where each member has different needs and expectations. Diogo Pinto will be tasked with developing policies that address these varied challenges while strengthening support for the clubs. This could be akin to juggling swords while walking a tightrope — a delicate balance between local and global interests.
A mandate focused on the future
Diogo Pinto sees himself as a key player in the development of policies and lobbying activities for clubs across the region. “It is a privilege to continue serving Region I and its member clubs,” he stated. In a context where mobility must become safer, more sustainable, and affordable, his skills in European public affairs will be leveraged to amplify the voice of consumers and mobility clubs.
Expectations from the FIA secretariat
Willem Groenewald, Secretary General of the FIA for Automotive Mobility and Sustainability, emphasises the importance of this new role: “Diogo brings solid experience in public affairs and a deep understanding of the Region I network.” It’s as if the FIA has found its captain to navigate sometimes turbulent waters, where regulation and innovation must coexist harmoniously.

The challenge awaiting Diogo Pinto is colossal. With growing concerns about the environment and road safety, the role of the FIA is more crucial than ever.
